Organist Position at Church of the Good Shepherd (UCC)

Church of the Good Shepherd in Albuquerque is seeking an organist for its 11 a.m. Sunday worship services.

Responsibilities and compensation are as follows:

  • Leads the congregation’s singing by playing hymns selected by the Director of Music.
  • Coordinates monthly music schedule with the Director of Music to determine service music needed.
  • Selects and performs short service pieces that support Sunday’s scripture and sermon topic. The church’s pianist and occasionally the Bell Choir or other musicians share responsibilities for
    • Prelude
    • Opening Reflection
    • Offertory
    • Communion (first Sunday of the month)
    • Closing Reflection
    • Postlude
  • Provides organ music requested for weddings and funerals (additional compensation is provided).
  • Schedules absences with the senior pastor and Director of Music and arranges for substitute organists during absences. Several capable organists in the congregation are available as substitutes.
  • Purchases necessary service music at his/her own expense. Note: A large library of organ music is available for use.
  • Organist does NOT have weekly Thursday evening choir rehearsal responsibilities. Occasional substitution may be requested and extra rehearsals will be compensated according to the hourly pay. Compensation is paid hourly; job requires approximately 10 hours per week, including personal practice time, selection and planning music, and additional services which may include occasional choir/soloist rehearsals; personal growth such as keyboard proficiency and work on new repertoire; attending AGO meetings or workshops.
  • Budgeted amount for 2019 organist position is $12,600 a year. Time sheets are filled out and submitted for signature to the Music Director (or pastor in her absence) every two weeks.

Church Organist – Monte Vista Christian Church (Disciples)

Job Title: Church Organist

Summary
We are looking for an organist/accompanist who can help us continue to enhance/expand our music ministry, both in Sunday morning worship services & beyond (such as concerts, collaborating with guest musicians, working with others in providing music programs that encourage a passion for music – for children, adults, & families). A creative, team-player type is preferred. Oversees organ and piano music by performing the following duties:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Works with Music Director and Senior Minister in planning services.
  • Provides organ and/or piano music at all 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning services, rehearsals, and special services (Thanksgiving, Hanging of the Greens, Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday).
  • Reports to the Director of Music regarding the condition and needs for the maintenance of the church organs and pianos.

Others Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reserves first rights to play at weddings and funerals according to the Policies and Procedures Manual on a separate contract basis.
  • Selects guest musicians. Able to use church facilities (organs and pianos) for private teachings. Times of lessons and use of facilities must be scheduled in advance through the church office so as not to interfere with other scheduled activities.
  • Obtains and compensates a substitute if absence is required.

Term of Position

When feasible, it is requested that a two (2) weeks advance notice is given prior to resigning. Employment at Monte Vista Christian Church is on an “at- will” basis and is for no definite period and may, regardless of the date or method of payment of wages and salary, be terminated at any time with or without cause.

Schedule

Must notify the church at least one month in advance of a planned absence from a regular scheduled service or rehearsal and advise as to the name of the substitute. The absence needs to be approved by the Senior Minister. Must be present at 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday services and rehearsals.

Compensation and Benefits

This position is a part-time salaried position. However, extra wages, may be earned in addition to the base salary for other-than-worship performances. The following benefits will also apply: four weeks of paid personal leave each year as well as two weeks of paid sick leave. The leave will not accrue from year to year. The performance of this position shall be reviewed annually by the Senior Minister and submitted to the Personnel Committee in order to consider a possible cost-of-living increase, a merit increase, or other related adjustment to compensation.  Salary would likely be around $18,000 or so, negotiable based on experience & ability to fulfill these expectations.

Job Description:

This is a part time position that is responsible for the overall music program of the church, initiating programs, arranging for rehearsals, special music, etc. The Music Director also provides piano or organ accompaniment for both choir and congregation. He or she works closely and cooperatively with the pastor in planning music appropriate to the church’s liturgy and to the service. The Music Director is responsible to the Session through the Worship Committee. The Music Director has supervisory responsibility for the entire music program of the church, including music in worship and for special music events. These include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Plans the music and accompanies the choir on organ or piano, as appropriate for Sunday morning worship services, in coordination with the pastor, arranges for choir or other rehearsals, solos, special music, etc.
  2. Conducts the Chancel Choir in rehearsals and during all worship services in which the choir participates or assigns this duty in his/her absence.
  3. Conducts or assigns qualified person to work with children’s music. If done in conjunction with mid-week children’s program, meets and coordinates with Director of such program. Determines rehearsal and worship participation for group(s).
  4. May conduct or assign qualified person to conduct, as circumstances allow, one or more handbell choirs. Determines rehearsal and worship participation schedule for same.
  5. Coordinates the selection and ordering of ensemble music for all worship services in relation to the lectionary or to themes set forth in consultation with the Pastor or Worship Committee.
  6. Meets regularly with the Pastor to address worship planning and other staff concerns.
  7. Attendance is expected for all worship services including Sunday, Wednesday rehearsals with the Chancel Choir, and other special services, including (but not limited to) Christmas, Easter and weddings and funerals as requested.
  8. Will arrange for substitute musician(s) when on vacation or unable to play at a wedding or funeral.
  9. Establishes policies within assigned responsibilities. Meets monthly with the Worship Committee for worship planning and with (currently twice annual) Liturgy Planning Group. Consults with the Worship Committee to include the development of the music budget, oversight of expenditures, and maintenance of appropriate copyright requirements.
  10. Supervises soloists and other instrumentalists in coordinating the musical support of worship.
  11. Oversees the maintenance of all church-owned musical instruments within the parameters of the budget. Grants permission and is responsible or delegates responsibility for any out-of-church use of such instruments.
  12. For unscheduled special services for which he/she is asked to provide music the Music Director will receive additional compensation as per a fee schedule established by the church. This also includes weddings, funerals, memorial services, and other private functions held at the church.
  13. Orders supplies related to the church music program as necessary. Unusual or extraordinary materials requests are cleared with the Worship Committee and through the Session as necessary.
  14. Shall work an average of 25 hours per week with a total of three weeks paid vacation, preferably to be taken during the summer.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

  1. Experience with and understanding of innovative liturgical worship.
  2. High degree of competence in organ, piano, and choral music.
  3. Ability to sight-read and accompany.
  4. Willingness to rehearse sufficiently to maintain a high quality of music.
  5. Sensitivity and the ability to interact with a variety of people.
  6. Ability to take direction and work as a team member.

Primary Duties

  • Accompany weekly worship on Sundays at 9:30 am with a special focus on enabling congregational singing, incorporating the musical gifts of all people (including rehearsal time as needed), and seeking creative ways to incorporate young people into worship
  • These same duties for special worship days such as Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day
  • Four weeks including Sundays for vacation and two weeks including Sundays for continuing education of paid time off
  • Direct, accompany, and rehearse with the vocal choir one evening per week for 90 minutes and Sundays 9 to 9:20 am during the school year
  • Rehearse with Riverside Brass Ensemble 1 hour per week as needed
  • Participate in worship planning with pastor and volunteers
  • Demonstrate motivation and initiative through consistent collaboration with people and creative musical experiences for worship

Pianist position at First Unitarian Church

Job Summary

The pianist plays for congregational worship and choir rehearsals.

Essential Functions

  • Accompany congregation singing all but the first Sunday of each month, two services at 9:30 and 11am. Total 38 Sundays/year, plus Christmas Eve.
  • Accompany choir, attend choir rehearsals every Thursday evening mid-August through May. (choir sings in worship 1-2 times/month).
  • Accompany guest musicians if requested. Occasional solo playing as requested by the Director of Music
  • Provide occasional transitional music to help the flow of worship
  • Individual practice as necessary to learn music. Rehearse with guest musicians as necessary
  • Willingness to play for memorial services (compensated separately at the rate of $125, about 5/year)
  • Communicate in a timely way with Director of Music, guest musicians, and publications coordinator.
