The Cathedral of St John, 318 Silver Ave. SW, Albuquerque

gowers-headJoin us at our first program of the season to hear British organist Richard Gowers, organ scholar of King’s College, Cambridge, UK. King’s is best known for the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols broadcast to millions around the world on Christmas Eve. Richard now accompanies the famous Choir he once sang with as a boy treble. He will include works of J.S. Bach, Richard Wagner, and Julius Reubke. (More information in this newsletter.)

Lead by Karmen Van Dyke, Music Director, Second Presbyterian Church, Albuquerque.

Whether we believe that children and youth are the future of the church or, rather, that children and youth ARE the church, we must seek meaningful ways for them to take their place in leadership. Ms. Van Dyke will provide resources for both your congregation’s children and you which allow them to provide leadership in Sunday morning worship, especially (but not entirely) through music.

Lead by Juan Hernandez, Interim Director of Choral Activities, University of New Mexico

Organists often need a third hand to conduct their choirs! Mr. Hernandez will provide practical methods for choral directing – a practicum on choral leadership.

If the idea of improvisation scares the living daylights out of you, then this workshop is for you!!

Come and learn techniques for creating music on the spot. Learn how best to move freely from key to key and feel confident in doing so. This workshop is for the beginner and the more advanced player and everyone in between.

A unique opportunity for Chapter members to participate in a Master Class with James David Christie. Monday, February 20 – 10 a.m – An Introduction to the Pipe Organ for Adults

Ever wonder how pipe organs work? What all those knobs and tabs are for? Why are there foot pedals? Don’t miss this demonstration lead by Maribeth Gunning on the three-manual Reuter organ. If you play the piano, bring one of your piano pieces and try it out on the organ! This will be a learning and fun experience for you.

Sunday, April 2 – 3:30 p.m. – Maxine Thévenot, Organ Recital
Keller Hall, University of New Mexico

mtJoin us in the gala festivities celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Holtkamp Organ (Job 1468) in Keller Hall, University of New Mexico.

The organ recital by Maxine Thévenot at 4 p.m. will be preceded at 3:30 p.m. by remarks from Chair of Music Department, Eric Lau, and a lecture given by Christian Holtkamp, great-grandson to Walter Holtkamp, Jr., who was responsible for building and installing the Keller Hall instrument. Following the recital, from 5:30-6:30, will be a reception for AGO members and other invited guests at the UNM Art Gallery.
